Lexis, as I knew her, was a well-rounded person. Anything you needed her to be, she was. She was my cousin and my taxi driver whenever I came to town. If she were free, she would always drop me at the airport. I still hear her voice, “Y’all better be ready for 4 am.” By 4 am on the dot, you would listen to her knocking on the door. “Auntie Babbie, y’all ready yet?” When my mom and I needed to meet in Florida, Lexis was our travel agent. She would help us by organizing our trips, finding B&Bs for us to stay in, and booking them. She was like a banker. She cared for me when I needed to send or receive money from The Bahamas.
Lexis was honest and always straightforward. What you saw was what you got. She didn’t mince words. She gave advice when you didn’t want it, but you knew you needed it. Lexis was a great person. When I went to live in the US, she became like a daughter to my mom. Anything my mom needed, Lexis took care of it. I was always grateful for everything she did for my mother and sometimes a little jealous because I was not there to do stuff for my mother.
Lexis loved to travel. She was the bravest person in our family when it came to traveling. I was always afraid of heights, so it would’ve been very difficult to fly/travel like she did. I remember asking her how she could travel to all those countries without fear. She said, “I don’t think about it. I do it.” Yeah! If only I could think like that. Lexis was someone you could confide in. You never had to worry about your secrets getting out. Her left hand didn’t know what her right hand did. That was how safe your secret was with her. I was truly blessed to have been a part of her life.
I will never forget her infectious smile, kind heart, and beautiful personality. She was here to serve, and she has done us well. I know people usually say rest in peace, but if you know Lexis, she is not resting in heaven. She is probably busy helping where she’s needed.
I Love You, Lexis!
